Surface Laptop Ultra opens UK pre-orders at £2,599 as RTX Spark reaches ASUS and rival PCs

Microsoft has put UK prices against its NVIDIA-powered laptop. ASUS has two ProArt models, while Dell, HP, Lenovo and MSI join the launch. The important comparison is the configuration you can buy, the software you can run and how much memory your work actually needs.

Priced pre-orders begin on 7 October

Microsoft opened Surface Laptop Ultra pre-orders on 7 October 2026, with availability beginning on 16 October. Its UK store lists a starting price of £2,599 including VAT. The launch takes NVIDIA RTX Spark into a premium Windows laptop category aimed at creators and developers who want more GPU compute and more room for local AI. Microsoft: Surface pre-orders, 7 October. Microsoft Store UK configuration list.

ASUS is launching the ProArt P16 H7607 and ProArt P14 H7407 on the same platform. These are the RTX Spark models; the older P16 H7606 is a different product. ASUS says global pre-orders begin on 7 October and the first US units arrive on 16 October. Its release is dated 8 October in the Taipei dateline. Those dates do not establish UK delivery or UK pricing. ASUS: RTX Spark pre-orders and US availability.

UK price chart: the starting Surface is not the maximum specification

The UK configurator exposes two processor tiers. The £2,599 entry model has an 18-core CPU and 5,120-core GPU, 24GB unified memory and a 512GB SSD. The 20-core CPU and 6,144-core GPU tier starts at £3,699. Selecting a larger memory pool can change the purchase cost far more than the headline starting price suggests. Moving from the £2,599 configuration to the listed 128GB model adds £3,300, approximately 127%. That is an editorial calculation from the store prices. It also changes the chip, storage and Windows edition, so it is not a pure memory-upgrade price. A specification sheet saying “up to 128GB” does not mean the entry machine includes that memory.

ASUS has not provided a verified sterling price in the UK product pages or the UK model searches checked for this briefing. Its launch release gives a US starting price of US$2,599.99 for the ProArt laptop range. That is a US MSRP, not a UK retail quotation, and cannot be used to rank the ASUS laptops against the VAT-inclusive Surface price. ASUS ProArt P16 H7607 UK. ASUS ProArt P14 H7407 UK. The display comparison needs care. OLED and mini-LED behave differently with dark content, blooming, reflections and sustained brightness. Microsoft specifies its 2,000-nit claim over a 10% HDR window. ASUS says its peak figure measures the panel and can change after glass, touch integration and calibration. Putting 2,000 and 1,600 into a table is useful; declaring the Surface 25% better as a complete display would overstate what those figures prove.

For travel, the advertised P14 weight is 290g below the P16, a reduction of about 16%. The P16 is nevertheless thinner on the quoted figures. Battery capacity in watt-hours is stored energy, not a runtime measurement: a larger battery does not establish longer endurance if the screen and sustained workload draw more power. Rendering and local inference need separate battery tests.

The shared hardware: Grace, Blackwell and one memory pool

RTX Spark combines an Arm-based NVIDIA Grace CPU with Blackwell RTX graphics. CUDA support is central to its attraction for AI and accelerated creative software. NVIDIA’s laptop specification lists 18-core / 5,120-core and 20-core / 6,144-core variants, with 45–80W superchip TDP ranges. The former supports up to 64GB LPDDR5X; the latter up to 128GB. These are platform limits, not guarantees that every manufacturer sells every combination. NVIDIA RTX Spark specifications.

A shared memory pool lets CPU and GPU workloads use the system’s capacity without the same fixed division between system RAM and a discrete GPU’s dedicated VRAM. It remains finite memory. Windows, applications, model weights, temporary buffers and the model’s context cache all compete for space. Microsoft explicitly says GPU-addressable memory is less than total system memory. Surface Laptop Ultra UK.

For a rough capacity illustration, weights alone need parameters × bits per weight ÷ 8 bytes. A 120-billion-parameter model at an idealised 4 bits per weight uses about 60GB before quantisation metadata, runtime buffers or context storage. At 16 bits, weights alone use about 240GB. These are arithmetic estimates, not demonstrations on these laptops. They explain why a 24GB machine cannot inherit every capability advertised for a 128GB configuration.

The advertised petaflop figure is low-precision FP4 AI compute, with sparsity assumptions in Microsoft’s footnotes. It is not one petaflop of general FP32 work, and it does not specify tokens per second, video-export speed or training time. Model architecture, precision, memory bandwidth, software kernels and cooling determine the result users experience. The launch is promising for local inference and experiments; it does not establish laptop-scale pre-training of a frontier model.

Windows on Arm: check the whole workflow

A familiar Windows desktop does not remove the architecture change. Native Arm applications and supported CUDA paths are the strongest case. Prism can run many x86 applications, but a working main app does not prove that every plug-in, hardware driver, command-line extension or anti-cheat component works. An editor should test the camera codec, effects and export settings they use; a developer should test the framework, package wheels and GPU extension they need.

Microsoft’s launch also introduces a broader local-and-cloud software strategy. It says Microsoft Execution Containers are generally available for Windows 11; GitHub’s local/cloud routing is due in experimental preview later in October, while Copilot hybrid features are expected over coming months. Those later capabilities should not be written as software every buyer receives on delivery day. Microsoft: Windows hybrid intelligence, 7 October.

DGX Station is a separate deskside system; the Copilot panel describes forthcoming software. Credit: Microsoft; image supplied by the reader.

The graphic’s up to 284-billion-parameter statement is a vendor claim, not a universal capacity guarantee for every RTX Spark laptop. The 120-billion-parameter calculation above is an illustration, not a model-size ceiling. Model architecture, quantisation, context length and memory available to the runtime determine what can run. The deskside DGX Station claim must not be applied to the laptop configurations. Microsoft: Windows hybrid intelligence, 7 October.

Running inference locally can avoid API token charges for that operation. It does not remove the laptop cost, electricity, model or application licensing, support work, or cloud calls made by connected tools. Keeping weights on the laptop also does not automatically keep every agent action offline: the configured tools and network permissions determine where information travels.

Microsoft says the named launch laptops begin shipping on 16 October, but that global statement still needs a local retailer check. HP’s X 14 and Lenovo’s Pro 9n should not automatically inherit the date given to the specifically named Ultra 16 and Yoga 9n convertible. Nor should a desktop partner logo be turned into an invented model number.

The practical alternative to a clamshell is the Lenovo or MSI convertible if pen work matters. Surface Laptop Ultra supports touch but explicitly does not support Surface Pen or Slim Pen. NVIDIA DGX Spark systems, such as ASUS Ascent GX10, are another product family; they should not be merged with these Windows RTX Spark laptops merely because both names contain “Spark”.

What UK buyers should check before ordering

  1. Choose a complete SKU. Write down chip tier, unified memory, SSD, Windows edition, finish and VAT-inclusive price. Compare that bundle with another vendor’s actual UK listing, not its highest specification beside its lowest price.

  2. Check charger terms. Microsoft’s UK FAQ says the charger is sold separately. The UK configurator advertises a free 140W adapter with pre-order, but the offer terms name Germany, France and Austria. The same configurator lists the adapter’s usual price as £109.99. This inconsistency needs clarification before a UK free-charger promise is made.

  3. Keep regional offers separate. Microsoft’s headline MacBook Pro trade-in offer of up to US$1,000 is limited to the US and Canada in its launch terms. It is not a verified UK promotion.

  4. Test one real workflow. Use the intended codec, project, model precision and context length. Record elapsed time, memory consumption, errors, fan noise and power conditions.

  5. Verify delivery and return terms. The 16 October launch date does not guarantee every colour, memory configuration or country ships that day. The 128GB Surface listing already shows why availability is a separate column. Microsoft Store UK configuration list. Surface Laptop Ultra UK. Microsoft: Surface pre-orders, 7 October.

What would change the assessment

Confirmed UK ASUS and rival configurations would allow a fair price comparison. Independent tests would establish sustained rendering, model throughput, battery endurance under GPU load and compatibility with real production tools. Until then, Surface has the clearest UK price evidence in this briefing, P14 has an explicit portability advantage over P16 on quoted weights, and the platform’s larger memory options make local AI more plausible. None of those findings establishes an overall performance winner.
